Oil lamps run on a highly refined type of paraffin lamp oil which is clean, odourless, and burns with a sootless flame (as long as the wick is set correctly).

The oil is soaked up by the cotton wick or fibre glass wick (depending on the type of oil lamp) and when it reaches the top, creates a tiny amount of vapour. When lit, it is the oil vapour that burns to create the flame. The fuel will not burn without a wick. This is important from a safety point of view. You can drop a lit match into a bottle of lamp oil and it will be extinguished!
